Commission: Chain Glove

Description

A friend of mine enquired about buying a vambrace a while ago- but when I showed it to them, they weren't too keen. Instead, they asked about a custom-made three-fingered chain glove.

Having never tried making something like this before, I wasn't sure how it would turn out- but it came together well and the end result is pretty good. In fact, I think that the fingers are probably my best piece of chainmaille so far!

The palm is open- the edges you can see here are the edges of the piece. It doesn't wrap round more than that.

There were only two problems- one was that I originally made the fingers too thin. I measured width based on mine, then added extra for flexibility and some more to be safe. I wasn't THEN aware that I have really long, thin fingers, so my friend couldn't fit the thing over his hand! :XD: I added yet more room and the end result is a good fit.

The other problem is this photo- I put the glove on to show the shape, but having not been made for me, it's not such a great fit. The fingers are too short, and a little too wide, and the back-hand-guard bit should come down over the wrist. :XD: Imagine it on a smaller hand.

Also, I added a wrist-fastening after this was taken.

The material is galvanised iron, and I now have calluses the size of Honfleur!

In summary, yay! I made a little money out of this. Not a whole lot, as it was sold to a friend- but it's nice to get SOMETHING for two days work. :-)

It was (in no particular order- just some frequently used currencies):
11 Euros
15 US$
7.50 GBP£
18 AUD$
15 CAD$

That's a good deal, I think- around half what I'd want to sell it for at a craft fair or similar- for a whole gauntlet (as in, a joined glove and vambrace) I would probably attempt to sell it at four times the price. Considering how that would be a pretty big piece, I think it's fair. The question is if anybody (besides me) wants that much chainmaille.

Time consuming to make, compared to flat sheets and chains, but not ridiculous- fun to do the fingers, too.

I think, over time, the quality of my work has improved greatly (compare to my first attempts at japanese 4-in-1).

I recently 'tested' a piece of my armour-strength steel 4-in-1 (it was wearing down my wire cutters to make!), and it's VERY tough. My test was thus:

I hit it a few times with the pointy bit of an edge trimmer.

More on that later.
